Creating an identity
Who are you?
First of all you need to know yourself. Today’s marketplace is so congested, a clear idea of your business identity will give you a head start. Ask yourself lots of questions. What image do you want to project? Are you caring, dynamic, inexpensive? What can your customers expect from your products and services, what makes you so different from the competition?
Know your market
A good working knowledge of your market will help you to decide what image to project. Do they want reliable old fashioned values, or a funky, modern vibe? Do you fit a specific niche or do you want to compete across the board on price? This will help point you towards your overall look.
Get a logo
Your logo is at the centre of your business identity. This vital piece of design will integrate your website, packaging and promotional material. It’s visual shorthand for who you are. Your logo should reflect what your business does. It should be clear, distinctive and easy to identify. You may be tempted to put a logo together yourself. Don’t. Good design sells, bad design could harm you.
Get out there
Think about the huge variety of platforms available to communicate your brand. How are you going to let the world know you have arrived? A web-site is a must but consider other ‘hot’ media particularly if you want to establish with younger audiences. Think e-newsletters, blogs and pod casts.
